What Is a Hamptons-style Home?

This style of living is all about luxurious comfort, natural fibres and neutral tones. It’s a space where sophistication, elegance and relaxation work harmoniously. Effortless flow and function are key, but so too are confidence and timelessness.

It’s important to also understand what is not Hamptons. While its progeny lies in Long Island beach-style living, this is not just coastal decor, and it’s too luxurious and refined to become cliché beachy.

1. Begin With Refined Coastal Hamptons-style Exteriors

When it comes to achieving this look outside, think of weatherboard cladding, spacious porches and al-fresco zones that are perfect for entertaining. These homes champion the outdoors; they make the most of outside social settings, blur the boundaries, and bring the outside in where possible. The Hamptons-style exterior is perfect in an Australian context—we’re blessed with some of the best weather on the planet, and these homes take full advantage of it.

The architectural features of our Kurmond Homes Iris design are a superb example. The welcoming façade features a combination of natural timber and brick cladding, a white and neutral exterior palette, large windows complete with white framing, and an overall feeling of generous space.

If you’ve got a green thumb, your Hamptons-style garden will be purposefully designed, orderly, and beautifully manicured.

2. Abundant Light Is Key to Hamptons Interior Design

We spoke about bringing the outside in – perhaps nowhere is this more obvious than natural lighting. Those wonderfully sized windows bathe every room in daylight. A brighter room typically feels bigger, so natural lighting enhances the feeling of spaciousness and cleanliness that are key to Hamptons homes.

Venetian blinds lend themselves beautifully to this interior style. Clean and contemporary, they add a fabulous lightness to any room. If you’d prefer fabric, opt for linen curtains rather than anything too bold or heavy.

When the sun goes down, mood lighting takes centre stage. It’s soft and clean – glass is a great option for ensuring consistent, even illumination throughout (you can see examples of this throughout the Kurmond Homes Iris interior). If you want to introduce different light shades, select natural textures such as wicker and avoid heavy, colourful materials.

3. Hamptons-style Homes Exude a Neutral & Natural Palette

Speaking of colours, this is all about understated elegance. Whereas a beach house might embrace a primary palette or turn coastal colours into a cliché, a Hamptons-style house interior exercises sophisticated restraint. White is the classic go-to shade in this instance, and, of course, it’s available in infinite variations. Avoid stark white walls and instead opt for warmer tones. You want crisp but not clinical.

When introducing Hamptons decor furnishing colours, again keep things soft. Find inspiration from the natural world – pale slates, cool grey blues, gentle greens. Let the sea be your muse, but avoid any cliches.

In terms of the actual furnishings, it’s still all about the natural environment. Think marble, stone, timber, and jute. All these fibres introduce wonderful textures but exude an interior confidence and sophisticated coolness—they will lift a room rather than weigh it down. Timber floors are undoubtedly underfoot and should be accentuated with natural-fibre, neutral-palette rugs. From flooring to throw cushions, an iconic Hamptons-style house will show flair but restraint. Take a leaf from Coco Chanel’s book and always remove rather than add!

4. A Shaker Hamptons Kitchen Is the Heart of the Home

Nothing quite says modern Hamptons-style kitchen like a shaker design. This practical, spacious solution is ideal for busy Sydney homes and those who love entertaining. With its central island bench and generous cabinetry, a shaker kitchen is welcoming and airy, and those inside will just naturally gravitate to this space.

Keep things clean with classic shaker cabinetry and open or glass-panel shelving. A classic look will see traditional knobs on doors, but you could always give it a modern twist with something more unexpected.

An open plan is important for contemporary Hamptons-style homes, and the kitchen will likely flow into bigger living spaces where you’ll find an abundance of big, comfy seating options and handy side tables (styled with scented candles, eye-catching books and perhaps photo frames).

A Hamptons-style Bedroom is Serene and Calm

Welcome to your personal oasis. It’s no surprise that the bedroom incorporates everything we’ve learned about interior decorating Hamptons-style. The palette is warm and welcoming, and natural materials like linen bed sheets and jute rugs elevate the coastal retreat feel. Yet your sanctuary is also luxe—maybe by way of a surprise navy upholstered bedhead, indulgent cushions, a beautiful plant, lovely throws, and striking artwork (framed beautifully in timber or white, of course).
